What You Learn

The Foundations of CNC Operation micro-pathway helps you build the skills needed to start a career as an entry-level CNC operator. You will learn how to set up and operate CNC turning and milling equipment, interpret G-code and M-code, establish work offsets, and select and verify cutting tools.

The pathway also covers conventional machine operation, monitoring cutting conditions to catch issues like tool wear and chatter, making operator-level adjustments to keep parts within spec, and applying OSHA-aligned safety and 5S workplace practices. It supports progression into the Computer-Integrated Machining (A50210) associate degree program at your local community college.

CNC Setup & Operation

CNC Programming Fundamentals & Setup

Setting up and operating CNC turning and milling equipment, interpreting G-code and M-code, and verifying tooling and program readiness to produce machined parts.
  • Identify basic G-code and M-code functions used to control CNC machining operations
  • Load parts into CNC machines, establish work offsets, and verify program readiness
  • Install, select, and verify cutting tools for CNC turning and milling processes

Active Process Control

Monitoring cutting conditions, identifying issues such as tool wear and chatter, and making operator-level adjustments to maintain part quality.
  • Monitor machine operation and cutting conditions during both manual and CNC machining
  • Identify common machining issues such as tool wear, chatter, vibration, and dimensional variation
  • Make basic process adjustments as authorized to maintain part quality and process stability
  • Verify part quality after adjustments using appropriate measuring instruments

Manual Machining Setup & Operation

Safe setup and operation of conventional machine tools, including workholding, tooling, speeds and feeds, and common drilling operations.
  • Identify components and controls of drill presses and manual mills
  • Set up and align workholding devices
  • Select appropriate cutting tools
  • Calculate and apply basic speeds and feeds
  • Perform drilling, reaming, countersinking, and tapping operations

Workplace Safety & 5S

Operating safely in machining environments, complying with OSHA regulations, and applying 5S principles for organized, safe workspaces.
  • Operate in the workplace in a safe and effective manner following OSHA regulations and institutional safety protocols
  • Demonstrate proper use of PPE and adhere to lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
  • Apply 5S principles (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) to maintain an organized and safe work environment
